Understanding and Treating the Mentalis Muscle –

Level 7 Aesthetics Advanced Botulinum Toxin

In the world of cosmetic dermatology and facial aesthetics, botulinum toxin injections have become increasingly popular for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. One of the less commonly discussed areas of treatment is the mentalis muscle. Located in the chin area, the mentalis muscle plays a significant role in facial expression and can contribute to the formation of chin dimples and wrinkles. During your Level 7 Aesthetics Course we’ll delve into the anatomy of the mentalis muscle, its function, and how botulinum toxin can be effectively used to treat its overactivity.

Understanding the Mentalis Muscle in Aesthetics

The mentalis muscle is a key muscle in the lower face, situated in the chin area. Its primary function is to elevate and protrude the lower lip, helping in expressions like pouting and pursing the lips. However, overactivity of the mentalis muscle can lead to the formation of horizontal wrinkles across the chin, commonly known as “chin dimples” or “cobblestone chin.”

Treatment with Botulinum Toxin:

Botulinum toxin, (commonly referred to as Botox®, which is a popular brand of the product), is a neurotoxin that works by blocking the signals between nerves and muscles, thereby temporarily paralysing the muscles and preventing them from contracting. When strategically injected into the mentalis muscle, botulinum toxin can help relax the muscle, reducing its activity and smoothing out wrinkles and dimples in the chin area.

Treating the mentalis muscle with botulinum toxin can be an effective solution for addressing chin wrinkles and dimples, helping you achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
